About Louisiana Roofing

Roofing contractors in Louisiana provide many services, mostly focused on residential and commercial structures. For new buildings, roofing contractors complete the important task of constructing roofs, which must meet certain specifications to withstand the area's climate and to maintain structural integrity. These contractors may also perform inspections, weatherize roofs, or make other modifications to roofs.

Typical Climate in Louisiana

Louisiana's semitropical climate stays fairly constant year-round. The closer an area is to the Gulf of Mexico, the more humid it is and the less variation there will be in temperature. Fall and summer often bring hurricanes and tropical storms, with high winds and heavy rainfall.

Common Roofing Issues

Much roof damage in Louisiana is incurred by water and wind damage. The worst of this damage occurs during hurricanes and tropical storms. Wind can pull up shingles, allowing moisture to seep in and rot the wood below. Wind can also cause trees or branches to fall on roofs, causing structural damage. The most extreme damage wind has on roofs is when it lifts an entire roof from the frame of a building.

The humid climate of Louisiana also causes problems for roofs. Moisture can find its way underneath roof shingles from the normal buildup of leaves and debris, which can trap moisture in one place if they are not removed, and ultimately, cause serious damage. Debris buildup in gutters can also cause wood around the edge of a roof to rot.

Licensing

Louisiana requires that roofing contractors be licensed by the State Licensing Board for Contractors. Roofers fall under either the building construction or residential construction licensing classifications. A contractor must hold a Residential Building Contractor's license if they are working on a residence three-stories or less in height and if the cost of the project is more than $50,000.To obtain a license, a contractor must pay for and pass an exam and pay the $100 license fee.

Unusual Roofs in Louisiana

New Orleans, Louisiana is home to the Superdome, a large covered sports arena. The building is noticeable for its large, curved roof. The roof is constructed with steel lamella. It is unusual in its size and the fact that there are no obstructing posts in its structure.
